Travelling Brazil and Uruguay At 10am On Saturday the 27th of February Lais (my host mother), Humberto (my host father), Marcos (my host brother) and I all set off for the long drive to the state of Rio Grande do Sul. I was very excited to travel to the most southern state of Brazil and to staying in the capital of the state (Porto Alegre). About half an hour into my trip we had to turn around because I had forgotten my camera and passport. Now we set off again at about 11am, I got in the car with my camera in my hand ready to get some amazing pictures of the journey ahead. But I fell asleep for the whole 12 hours of driving and when my parents woke me up we were at a motel because they wanted to finish the driving tomorrow. The next day I also slept for the next 6 hours of driving and my brother had given me a new nickname that the family were to call me ‘’Dorminyoka’’ which translates to sleep-ziller. I guess now my family thought they were pretty funny because when I went to take my

The Journey: At 4am on the 22nd of January I woke up to the start of the biggest journey of my life so far. I checked my bags, packed up my computer and sat in the kitchen watching everyone eat because I wasn’t hungry. 5am came and we got in the car for the drive to Sydney Airport. The night before I had to say goodbye to Jack because there wasn’t enough seats for him to come, we sat in my room together and I cried and cried for so long hugging him. When we got to the airport I got changed into my rotary uniform and mum and I went to the money exchange and bought New Zealand, U.S and Brazilian currency. I then checked in by myself while mum and my family waited for me. Geoff my Rotary Youth Exchange Chairman also came to make sure everything was going fine for everyone and that everyone showed up. I also found one of my friends who was going to America on exchange and he was just about to fly out as well. He said goodbye to his family and I said goodbye to mine. When I hugged Jason I s

Today I have realised how close it is until i leave for the biggest adventure of my life. In just 15 days from now i will be traveling to Sydney airport with my family and saying goodbye to them for 12 months of my life. I am really only just begining to realise how much i am going to miss my animals, friends and family. And it feels dumb to admit that i am actually a bit nervous and scared for my trip now but it is very re assuring to know that my first host family are such lovely people. Doing year 11 when i get back wont be so bad because my best friends will also be in that year with me, but when i get back i will be in the grade below my twin brother which will be strange. I really hope my friends and family dont change or anything while i am gone and things will be the same when i get back and everything will be fine. On christmas and new years i thought to myself this will be my last christmas and new years in australia =[ (for a year anyway) for christmas i got a really good ca

As most teenagers I love spending time with my friends, socialising at school, going to parties, playing sport, having fun, and laughing and going out with friends. Even though these things all sound great for the past few years I have felt that there is a lot more to see in the world and a lot more to be done. I live in a small country town and love my family and friends I have here, I could not imagine my life without them, but soon I will need to learn how this feels. I have been selected to represent Australia as a Rotary Exchange Student for 2010 – 2011 and will be going to Brazil. As a future Rotary Exchange student I will spend one year living as a full time student in another country. I will depart and head overseas to Brazil in January. I will have a Sponsor (Australian) Rotary Club and a Host (Overseas) Rotary Club. My Host Rotary Club will arrange things for me, such as host families, a counsellor and my schooling. Rotary Youth Exchange programs are generally open to enrolle
